Sir Ian McKellan holidays in South of France
Veteran actor Sir Ian McKellan was spotted basking in the heat on a beach holiday in Saint Tropez, South of France.
Not to be outdone by his Hollywood chums who all seem to be dating people many years their junior, Sir Ian was snapped on the beach with a much younger male companion.
The actor seemed to be having a great time as he emerged from the water in a pair of purple beach shorts after spending the day enjoying fun and frolics in the warm, blue Mediterranean waters with his friend as fans looked on.
Saint Tropez is known as the playground of the rich and famous and has a range of events throughout the year that are popular with residents and tourists alike.
Every October a regatta is held in the bay of Saint Tropez which draws in scores of yachts, some up to a whopping 50 metres in length. Many tourists visit Saint Tropez specifically for this event, while others merely top by on their way to Marseilles, Nice or Cannes.
Saint Tropez is also known for its gorgeous beaches, which are located along the coast in the Baie de Pampelonne, also known by local residents as Grania, which lies south of Saint Tropez and east of Ramatuelle.
Pampelonne offers a plethora of pristine beaches along its five-kilometre shore. Each beach is about thirty metres wide and includes its own beach hut and private or public tanning area - dependent on personal preferences of course.
Many of Saint Tropez's beaches offer a variety of activities such as windsurfing, sailing and water skiing. There are also canoeing equipment, power boats and jet bikes available for rent.
July is the perfect time to visit Saint Tropez, as there are a host of events taking place including Jazz sur l'eau, a jazz festival taking place on a boat just off the beach of "les Canoubiers".
On July 15th up until August 14th, Saint Tropez will also host the Nights of the Chateau de la Moutte Festival, an extravaganza of theatre, dance, tango, jazz and shows for young children.
