If Paris Hilton went on holiday in France one might assume she would chose to visit her namesake, but when the US socialite did hit the continent she made a beeline for the coastal resort of Cannes.
It was hardly a surprising choice, for during the Cannes Film Festival the exclusive town becomes awash with celebrities promoting their latest film, or simply in France for the fun of the festival.
Paris made a high profile appearance during her
holiday while visiting a Lionel Ritchie show, arriving half way through the Motown singer's set at jewellers Chopard's 150th birthday party.
However, her appearance did cause some controversy as Mean Girls star Lindsay Lohan was also at the event and the two former best friends are said to now be at logger heads.
Paris was accompanied by an entourage of six during her holiday in the French city, with her group including younger sister Nicky, brother Barron and parents Richard and Kathy.
The star was pictured wearing a strapless blue gown, which plunged at the chest.
It is not hard to see why the cream of the celebrity world does flock to Cannes each year for what is now one of the world's most famous film festivals.
While it began life as a humble fishing village, the coastal resort now oozes in class and opulence, with its palatial oceanfront hotels lining boulevards, which are kindly offered shade by the palm trees standing high above.
Meanwhile, those with a passion for spending will feel at home in the city's chic boutiques and make the most of the sale season at the beginning of every year there is the January Shopping Festival.
Come evening, the city is brought to life with a vast array of casinos and top-end restaurants, which offer nothing but the best to those who pay the high prices to frequent the salubrious establishments.
However, for those on a slightly more conservative budget to Paris, there are also other entertainment establishments to suit a range of budgets - the town needs to court tourism relentlessly when the festival buzz dies after May and so has accommodated for a range of potential visitors.
And those looking for culture not just haute couture will be impressed by the beauty and architecture of nearby Le Suquet, which boasts cobbled streets and stunning views over the city and out to the ocean.
