Mariah Carey in Puerto Rico

Mariah Carey in Puerto Rico
Singer Mariah Carey is more known for hitting high notes and her diva-like ways than affection for water sports.

But the larger than life star was spotted showing off her surfing kills while on holiday on the sunny island of Puerto Rico.

She was joined in the ocean by her three dogs JJ, Cha Chan and Dolomite, who were also attempting to ride the waves on her surfboard.

Mariah was in Puerto Rico, bizarrely, to get in the festive mood to pen material for a Christmas album to release via her record label Mercury Records.

While it is not obvious what exactly made Mariah feel the Caribbean island would provide good inspiration for a festive album, it is not hard to see why the American star wanted to relax there.

Puerto Rico has a reputation for combining easy living Caribbean ways with all the mod cons of 21st century America - an alluring mix for tourists.

Furthermore, its diverse mix of Latin culture and Spanish food with beautiful landscape and stunning beaches make it an idyllic destination to kick back and relax in.

For entertainment, holidaymakers can explore ancient 15th century Spanish forts - a reminder of the old colonial days - be wined and dined in restaurants at very reasonable prices, flex their credit cards in air conditioned shopping malls or embark on a journey into the tropical rainforest.

Come evening time, casinos open their doors, signs above bars take on a fantastic neon capacity and bands treat visitors to jazz renditions, Puerto Rican style.

One sight tourists should ensure they don't miss is Isla Mona - the island's third largest archipelago, which is a nature reserve with no natural inhabitants.

Nicknamed the Galápagos Islands of the Caribbean, Isla Mona's unique ecosystem has fascinated scientists who have taken great pains to protect the area. Visitors flying in need a permit to do so and the most common way to access the region is by private yacht, though there are organisations that run excursions.

[Meanwhile, Puerto Rico has also woken up to the potential of its coastline as a water sports haven and holidaymakers can do everything from diving to waterskiing and surfing during their stay.

However, it may be best for the average holidaymaker to leave their pets in the hotel room when embarking on such adventures.

Only a singer as extravagant as Mariah Carey can pull off taking her pooches for a paddle without coming a cropper.
