Lanzarote - An Island for Water Sport Fans

Lanzarote’s coastlines are not all about lying down and sunbathing. The strength and currents of the Atlantic Ocean waters make this island a dream for sport enthusiasts.

When talking about Lanzarote beaches, the range of choice is very wide. The island joins both paradisiacal beaches with white sand and quiet waters/coastal spots of wild beauty and powerful ocean currents.

The area is also particularly popular amongst many sports fans that decide to travel to villas in Lanzarote -whatever the season is- and partake in the following aquatic activities;

Surfing: this sport consists of “travelling” on the waves standing and balancing on a board. It also includes other categories that are also practiced in the island. These are shortboard, where the surfing board must be between 1.50 and 2.10 metres long (5-6.8 feet); and longboard, with the board measuring 2.75 metres (9 feet) or more.

Body boarding: this derivation of surfing consists of a small, rectangular piece of hydrodynamic foam. Bodyboarding styles include ‘prone’ (layout flat on your belly), ‘dropknee’ (one foot forward and flat on the deck and the back leg with its knee on the deck), and ‘stand-up’ (both feet on the deck).

Windsurfing: although it also includes a board to sail on the waves, windsurfing differs from surfing because it comprises a mast, wishbone boom and sail, which are powered by the wind.

Windsurfing is one of the most popular sports in the Canary Islands. In Lanzarote, the North-East beach called Las Cucharas is the most famous amongst the windsurfing community. It frequently hosts world championship events and was the breeding ground of international champions.

Kite surfing: this sport aims to combine wakeboarding, windsurfing, surfing, paragliding and gymnastics all together in an activity that requires real balance, strength and flexibility. In the case of kite surfing, the board is dragged by a kite which harnesses the power of the wind to propel a rider across the water.

Diving: diving lovers will appreciate the depths of the Lanzarote coasts. Under the water, the volcanic formations give rise to an interesting and colorful marine fauna and flora.

Due to its constant wind and strong currents, Playa Famara and Playa Honda are hotspots for aquatic sports such as surfing, windsurfing or kite surfing.

This variety of sports is why, every year, numerous enthusiasts of aquatic sports choose Lanzarote villas as their holiday destination. The island offers both a place to relax and release adrenaline.
