Kate Winslet in Mexico

Kate Winslet in Mexico
The breakdown of any marriage is a hard thing, but for a celebrity under the spotlight it can be especially tough.
So Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet chose to shun the limelight as news broke of her split from husband Sam Mendes and jetted off to a warm climate to escape the media heat.
Her choice of location was the ever-sunny Mexico, with its fabulous beaches, friendly locals and, perhaps most importantly, relative lack of paparazzi.
The Titanic star was spotted wearing a black bikini as she climbed on board a boat with a supportive group of friends, which included fellow UK actress Emma Thompson.
Thompson had introduced Winslet and Mendes at a barbeque she threw and perhaps felt some responsibility to comfort her friend in her hour of need.
Winslet also took her two children to Mexico with her – one from her marriage to Mendes and another from her first marriage to Jim Threapleton.
It is not know whereabouts in Mexico the actress has chosen to lick her wounds, aside from that it is a coastal resort.
However, as she climbed about a speed boat with friends and family, raising her arms in the air, it looked as though Mexico was having a healing effect on the Revolutionary Road star.
One of the reasons it is so hard to pinpoint exactly where Kate might be is the range of destinations Mexico has to offer tourists.
From the 1,300-year-old Maya palace at Palenque, where the sound of parrots screeching and monkeys growling is almost deafening, to the turquoise coastline at Puerto Vallarta and the cosmopolitan hustle and bustle of Mexico City, there is something for everyone.
Bright young things can go clubbing, families can dine out at fusion restaurants and enjoy fabulous Mexican seafood, while the Pacific offers the perfect opportunity for water sports or nature spotting, with sea lions and exotic fish [a] normality for Mexicans.
Mexico has so much to offer that for the 19 million people who live in this country which straddles temperate and tropical zones, boasts 10,000km of coastline and reaches 5km into the sky, that tourism has become the main source of income.
While some choose to indulge in the Mexico's natural assets and relax, like Winslet, for others adventure tourism has a growing appeal.
This can see holidaymakers go canyoneering near Monterrey, take cooking lessons in Veracruz or go snorkelling among the coral reefs of the Yucatan. Some visitors choose to stay with local Mexican families and improve their Spanish during their stay, rather than check into a five-star hotel where they will be somewhat removed from authentic Mexican life.
But for those who would like to mix things up a little, they can rest assured that the serene Mexican beaches will always be waiting to offer them the same comfort they have hopefully afforded Winslet.
