Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt wed in Mexico
Reality television couple Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt got married in a secret ceremony while taking their holidays in Mexico, according to reports this week.
The pair, who star in 'The Hills', have endured an on-off relationship which has been chronicled very publicly on the US show, but they got engaged last year after eight months together.
But now Pratt has decided to speak out to confirm the rumours that they tied the knot after jetting off to Cabo San Lucas to exchange vows.
He said: "We had a beautiful ceremony here at One & Only Palmilla officiated by a minister and photographed by the hotel photographer."
Some reports have since questioned the validity of the claims, suggesting that they may not have acquired a marriage license or taken a separate civil ceremony, which is required by Mexican law.
However, Pratt said: "Like other elopements that happen outside the country, we'll take care of the legal details when we get home."
The news broke after US Weekly magazine published a host of images showing the couple at various stages of the marriage process at the ceremony on November 20th.
In addition, the report contains an interview with the pair and some finer details about the rings, the dress worn by Montag and the content of their vows, which were handwritten.
Photographer Peter Grossman, who also conducted the interview with Montag, 22, and Platt, 25, explained that they exchanged rings and vows in front of a minister at the Mexican chapel.
He said: "Heidi and Spencer are two people in love who had a beautiful wedding ceremony to celebrate that. The pictures and words in our issue this week bear that out."
Nevertheless, the news has caused considerable consternation among Montag's family, who were not informed of the decision or the fact that the ceremony was taking place.
In the magazine interview, she explains that she called her mother before the wedding and hinted that something was happening, but that "she was starting so much drama - I don't know when I'll tell her".
Meanwhile, her sister, Holly, has spoken of "frantically calling" Montag to find out what was taking place and that "everybody's pretty upset".
Cabo San Lucas is located at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula and is rapidly become a favourite destination for luxury holidays.
It is renowned for its glorious sandy beaches, while a number of hotels, resorts and timeshare clubs are emerging on the coast between San Lucas and San Jose del Cobo as the tourist industry grows in the region.
