Croatia's appeal attracts Beyonce and Jay Z

Croatia's appeal attracts Beyonce and Jay Z
Croatia is a popular tourist destination known for its natural attractions and culture, and this week attracted celebrity couple Jay Z and wife Beyonce Knowles.

The 27-year-old pop singer and her 39-year-old rapper husband were spotted enjoying a holiday aboard a yacht off the coast of Croatia after jetting in from New York, according to the Daily Mail.

Beyonce and her personal assistant took to the azure waters of the coast on a banana boat after which their entourage headed to a local restaurant in Dubrovnik's Old Town for dinner.

The musician, who is taking a break before embarking on the second half of her I Am... world tour, has reportedly been making the best of her holiday by enjoying a spot of shopping at local outlets.

Located in central and south-eastern Europe, Croatia boasts a 1,778km coastline dotted with attractions that make it a worthwhile holiday destination.

According to Lonely Planet, which says that the country's "pleasures are more timeless than trendy", a holiday in Croatia should not end without a visit to Dubrovnik.

Lord Byron once described the town as "the pearl of the Adriatic" and the destination guide says he was not exaggerating.

The guide says that the town is "clearly special", with "a magnificent curtain of walls [that] surrounds marble streets and baroque buildings that exude a pearly light in the Adriatic sun".

Worth visiting is the main pedestrian thoroughfare Placa, which is "a melange of cafes and shops with outstanding monuments at either end" such as churches, monasteries and museums.

These attractions are adorned with finely carved stone that hints at the Eastern European nation's "eventful history and vibrant artistic tradition".

Luxury hotels as well as those offering cheap accommodation are to be found in the country, whose interior has got a lot to offer although many visitors spend their time along the expansive coast.

Among the places worth visiting are the country's one-time capital Varazdin, which boasts carefully maintained baroque architecture at attractions such as the Croatian National Theater and the local cathedral.

For a variety of galleries, museums and a vibrant nightlife, holidaymakers may also want to check out Zagreb, the capital and largest city in Croatia.

Here, visitors can find a mix of modern architecture intertwined with the medieval streets of the Upper Town, with attractions ranging from Zagreb Cathedral, Mimara museum and the regal Hotel Esplanade.

According to Lonely Planet, Zagreb is "a fascinating destination on its own, combining the best of eastern and western Europe", although many tourists often fail to notice this because they rush to the coast.

The economic, political and cultural hub "throbs with energy but has retained a good deal of old-world graciousness" and is just three hours from the coast.
