Coleen and Wayne Rooney soak in the sun in Barbados
The beautiful and sunny island of Barbados has played host to Manchester United star Wayne Rooney and wife Coleen, who have been spotted soaking in the rays on the holiday destination's sandy beaches and turquoise waters.

Despite showing a baby bump, 23-year-old Coleen maintained her fashion sense as she was spotted in different bikinis on the Caribbean island, which they went to also to mark their first wedding anniversary, according to the Daily Mail.

While Coleen was more concerned with sunbathing and enjoying the occasional dip in the ocean, her husband opted for adrenalin rush-inducing activities including flying around the water on a jetski.

The couple seem to be in love with the island and have already visited once earlier in the year, according to the newspaper, which reports that they have a £5 million property in the same neighbourhood as Cheryl and Ashley Cole, Simon Cowell and Sir Cliff Richard.

It is easy to see why these high-profile individuals are lured to the island, which is one of the most popular tourist destinations and attracts people from all over the world.

There are a lot of attractions for visitors to check on the island including museums and historical sites such as Farley Hill, which comprises "rugged hills and picturesque grounds" that represent the setting of a classic plantation, according to the island's tourist body.

Here visitors can see "a stately ruin with some 99 windows overlooking a national park with sweeping views of the Scotland District and the Atlantic coastline".

Alternatively, visitors can go to the 250-year-old cane-crushing Morgan Lewis Sugar Mill, which is the largest remaining windmill on the island.

Due to the mild, subtropical weather of Barbados, an astonishing variety of flora and fauna exists on the island and holidaymakers can explore it by checking out natural attractions such as Andromeda Botanic Gardens.

Here, visitors can explore carefully landscaped grounds with lavishly coloured palms, orchids, exotics and shrubs, which represent arguably "the best collection of indigenous and exotic tropical flowers and plants to be found anywhere in the Caribbean".

Those keen on getting mementos for their trip to the island may be glad to hear that a wide variety of beautiful local craftwork is available.

According to Visit Barbados, much of the artwork is "created out of the island's most readily available natural resources such as clay, wood, palm leaves, bamboo, shells and leather".

With pottery, batik, basket making, jewellery and woodcarving listed among the prominent local skills, holidaymakers will be spoilt for choice.

There is a lot more for visitors to Barbados to explore, from wedding venues and dining places to its festivals and vibrant night life.

Before visiting such overseas destinations, however, it may be wise to familiarise yourself with local culture and mannerisms, according to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, which has launched a campaign urging people to do this.
