But pictures of her relaxing on the beach with her boyfriend Jason Trawick seem to prove that the dark days are behind the Baby One More Time singer - or maybe that's just the effect of the Hawaiian sun.
Either way, Britney was looking great in her turquoise bikini as she sipped on a cocktail on the exotic island, looking very much in love.
Jason, who is Britney's agent and has provided crucial support for her during a difficult period, also looked relaxed and focussed on keeping his girlfriend in good spirits on the holiday.
Now the pair are dating, he has stopped working for the Louisiana superstar in a bid to keep their relationship strictly unprofessional.
The pair fuelled speculation that their romance is set to go up a gear by spending an afternoon watching a wedding ceremony from the privacy of their Hawaiian hotel balcony.
